Pure white, not nearly white: getting a #FFFFFF product background

Amazon says pure white. Every guide says pure white. And almost every product photo that looks white to the eye is not — it is a pale grey with a slight colour cast, which is why it shows up on the listing page with a faint box around it. Here is what is going on and how to get it right without a studio.

What pure white actually means

On screen, pure white is RGB 255, 255, 255 — written #FFFFFF. Every channel at maximum. Marketplaces specify this because their product pages have a white background, and an image whose background is 248, 250, 246 sits on that page as a visible rectangle. The difference is small in numbers and obvious to the eye.

The cast matters as much as the brightness. A background at 252, 250, 244 is very slightly warm; on the page it reads as a cream tile. Cameras introduce this constantly through white balance, and it is almost impossible to see on the camera's own screen.

Why you cannot just shoot it

A camera exposes for the whole scene. If you light a white background until it records as 255 across the frame, the product in front of it is overexposed and loses detail. If you expose for the product, the background lands somewhere around 230 to 245 — clearly white to the eye, clearly not #FFFFFF to the page.

Studios solve this with a separately lit background, a second set of lights aimed only at the backdrop, roughly a stop brighter than the product. That works and it is why professional product photos look the way they do. It is also more equipment, more space and more setup than most sellers have.

Shadows are the other problem. A product on a white surface casts a shadow onto it, and a shadow is by definition not white. Lifting the product off the surface or lighting from multiple sides reduces it, but does not remove it.

The two-step fix

This is why background removal became a standard step in product photography rather than a repair for bad shots. It separates the two things a camera cannot do simultaneously: exposing the product correctly and producing a perfect white.

If you want a shadow back for realism, add a soft synthetic one afterwards. It will be consistent across the whole catalogue in a way photographed shadows never are.

  • Shoot for the product. Expose so the item itself looks right, on whatever plain background you have. Ignore the background entirely at this stage; it is about to go.
  • Remove the background and place the cutout on a generated #FFFFFF layer. A generated white is exactly 255 across the whole image, with no cast, no gradient and no shadow, because it was never photographed.

Checking your results

  • Open the image in any editor and read the pixel value in a corner. If it is not 255, 255, 255, it is not pure white.
  • Look at the listing on the marketplace, not just the file. The page is the only test that matters.
  • Check edges at 100% zoom against a black background before you place the product on white. Any grey fringe left by a poor cutout will show on white as a soft dirty edge around the product.
  • Save the final as JPG at high quality for upload — most marketplaces do not accept transparency on the main image and will flatten a PNG anyway, sometimes onto a colour you did not choose.

White products on white

A white mug on a pure white background disappears, and that is the one case where the marketplace rule works against you. The answer is not to tint the background. It is to keep the pure white and let the product's own shading define it: a slightly stronger side light, a subtle synthetic shadow, and edges that are cut cleanly rather than blended into the background.

This is also the category worth checking most carefully after automatic removal. White-on-white is the hardest boundary for any tool to find, and it is the one to spot-check every time.
