What you actually get

The output is a PNG with a real alpha channel at the resolution you uploaded. No watermark on any tier, including the free one, and no reduced-size preview — the file you see is the file you download.

That matters more than it sounds. A common pattern in this category is to show you a great-looking result, then hand over a small preview and charge for the real thing. If you are evaluating tools, downloading the actual file is the test worth running.

It is built for the edges that usually go wrong

Any tool can separate a mug from a table. The differences show up on hair, fur, glass, thin straps and mesh — places where a single pixel is part subject and part background, and the only correct answer is partial transparency.

Computing those fractions is called alpha matting, and skipping it is what produces the pale halo you see around a cheap cutout the moment it lands on a dark background. Cutola uses BiRefNet specifically because it does this step properly.

Then finish the image without leaving

Removing the background is usually step one. The editor picks up from there: put the subject on a flat colour, a studio gradient generated from its own tones, one of the built-in scenery backdrops, or a background image you upload. Or keep the original scene and blur it, for the portrait-mode look applied after the fact.

On top of that there is an optional drop shadow with offset, blur, opacity and colour controls, a sticker-style outline, edge refinement, and brightness, contrast, saturation and sharpness adjustments. Upscale, enhance, resize and format conversion are in the same place.

Getting the best result

• Contrast between subject and background matters more than anything else — dark hair against a light wall is easy, dark hair against a bookshelf is not.
• Upload the largest original you have; detail that was never captured cannot be recovered.
• Use the original file rather than a screenshot or a re-shared copy — JPG compression damages exactly the edges the model needs.
• Even, indirect light beats direct light, which throws hard shadows that get cut out with the background.
• Check the result on a dark background, not a white one. Halos are invisible on white and obvious on black.
• If the source is small, remove the background first and upscale afterwards.

Background removal is free within your daily allowance. Beyond that, credits are $2 for 10 with no subscription, or from $9 a month for 100, down to about 6.5¢ an image at the top plan.
