For Amazon sellers

Pure-white main images, without a photo studio

Amazon requires the main image of every listing to show the product on a pure white background, with no props, no text and no scenery. That single rule is the reason most sellers either pay per image or leave listings live with photos that quietly suppress their conversion.

How it works

  1. 1

    Shoot on anything

A phone on a contrasting surface is enough. The background is coming out.

  2. 2

    Cut and fill white

Remove the background, then fill with white for the main listing slot.

  3. 3

    Upload

Use the transparent version for A+ content, ads and your own store.

What Amazon actually requires

The main image rule is stricter than most sellers realise, and it is enforced unevenly enough that plenty of non-compliant listings stay up — which is not the same as those listings performing well.

The product must fill most of the frame, sit on a pure white background, and show nothing else: no logos, no watermarks, no borders, no inset text, no accessories that are not part of what you ship. Additional image slots are far more permissive, and that is where lifestyle and infographic images belong.

Check the current requirements in Seller Central before building a process around any specific figure. The rules are stable in principle and occasionally adjusted in detail.

Pure white is a specific colour

"White background" and "pure white" are different things. A sheet of white paper photographed under normal light is not pure white — it is a pale grey with a colour cast, and it will read as dingy next to a competitor's compliant image on the same results page.

Getting there in-camera means lighting the backdrop separately from the product, which is a studio problem. Getting there in software means cutting the product out and placing it on an actual pure white field, which takes seconds and is identical for every product in your catalogue.

The side effect is consistency: every listing sits on exactly the same white, whatever the weather was when you shot it.

Shooting so the cutout is clean

  • Do not shoot on white. A white product on a white background gives no edge to find — use a contrasting surface and add white afterwards.
  • Leave space around the product; nothing should touch the frame edge.
  • Diffuse the light. Hard shadows attach to the product and travel with it into the cutout.
  • Shoot square if your listing images are square, so you are not cropping blind.
  • Keep one consistent camera height and distance across the catalogue.

The economics for a seller with a real catalogue

At one or two products, paying a freelancer a couple of dollars an image is the rational choice. The maths changes fast: a catalogue of two hundred products, each needing a main image plus a few alternates, is a four-figure bill and a week of turnaround every time you refresh.

That cost is also why listings go stale. Sellers avoid reshooting because the editing bill follows, and the catalogue drifts further from what is actually in stock.

Bulk processing removes the per-image decision. You are not choosing whether an image is worth two dollars — you are running the batch.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon really require a pure white background?
For the main image, yes — Amazon's image requirements specify pure white with the product filling most of the frame and no additional props or text. Additional image slots allow lifestyle and infographic content.
Can I use the same image on Etsy and Shopify?
Yes, and it is the main reason to keep a transparent version. Flatten it onto white for Amazon, and place the same cutout on a coloured or lifestyle background elsewhere without editing twice.
What about products that are white themselves?
Photograph them on a contrasting surface — mid-grey works well — and place them on white afterwards. Shooting a white product on white removes the edge the software needs to find.
