How to photograph t-shirts and apparel for an online store
Clothing is the hardest common category to photograph well and the easiest to photograph badly. A t-shirt has no rigid shape, it creases, and the colour you see in the room is rarely the colour that reaches the customer's screen. This is a practical guide to the three ways shops actually shoot apparel, what each one costs you, and which to pick.
The three options, and what each one is for
Almost every clothing shop uses one of three approaches. They are not interchangeable — each answers a different customer question.
A flat lay answers "what is the print and the colour?" A ghost mannequin answers "what shape is it when worn?" An on-model shot answers "what does it look like on a person like me?" Most stores need at least two of the three, and the mistake is using only the one that is easiest to produce.
- Flat lay — the garment laid flat and shot from directly above. Cheapest, fastest, most consistent. Weakest at showing fit.
- Ghost mannequin — shot on a mannequin, which is then edited out so the garment appears to hold its own shape. Shows fit without a model.
- On-model — a person wearing it. Best for conversion on fashion, worst for consistency and cost.
Flat lay: get this one right first
If you only do one, do this. A flat lay is repeatable, which matters more than any single image being perfect — a catalogue where every product is shot the same way looks professional even when each shot is ordinary.
Lay the garment on a plain surface with the shoulders square to the frame. Steam or iron it first; a crease reads as damage on a screen even when it is nothing. Shoot from directly above, not at an angle, or the hem will look wider than the shoulders.
Light it from one side with a large soft source — a window with the direct sun off it is genuinely fine — and put something white on the opposite side to bounce a little light back into the shadow. Two hard lamps pointed at the garment will produce two shadows and a shine on the fabric.
- Shoot square if your store crops to square, so you are not cropping blind later.
- Fill more of the frame than feels natural; buyers zoom.
- Keep the camera height and distance identical between products so the catalogue lines up.
- Shoot on a surface that contrasts with the garment — a white t-shirt on a white sheet has no edge to find, for you or for any software.
Ghost mannequin, without the expensive part
The ghost mannequin look — the garment holding its shape with nobody inside it — is what most mid-size apparel brands use, because it shows fit without paying a model and without dating the photo to a particular season or body.
The traditional method is two shots: one on the mannequin as normal, one of the inside back collar, composited so the neck opening shows the inside of the garment. That compositing is the fiddly part.
The cheap version that works surprisingly well: shoot on the mannequin, remove the background, and accept a plain neck opening rather than compositing the inner collar. It is not what a luxury brand would ship, but it is a large step up from a flat lay and takes seconds rather than minutes.
On-model shots and the background problem
On-model photography converts well for fashion, and it creates a specific problem later: you cannot cleanly separate the garment from the person, because the person is part of the product story.
This matters if you sell on marketplaces. Amazon requires the main listing image to be the product on a pure white background, with no props and no scenery — an on-model shot in a park does not qualify, however good it is. The usual answer is a flat lay or ghost mannequin as the main image, with the model shots in the additional slots where lifestyle is allowed and helps.
It also matters for automatic background removal. Any tool, ours included, will separate a person from a background cleanly; what it cannot do is separate a garment from the person wearing it. If the output you need is the shirt alone, the shirt has to be photographed alone.
Colour: the thing that generates returns
Apparel returns are driven by fit and by colour not matching. Fit you cannot fix in software. Colour you can, and most small shops do not.
Set a custom white balance, or shoot one frame with a plain sheet of white paper in it and use that frame to correct the rest. Mixed lighting is the usual culprit: a window plus a warm ceiling bulb gives you a garment that is blue on one side and orange on the other, and no amount of editing separates them afterwards.
Check the final image on a phone as well as a laptop. Most of your customers will only ever see it on a phone, often outdoors.
Getting to a clean, consistent catalogue
Once the shots exist, consistency is a processing job rather than a photography one: same background, same crop, same output size across every product.

Remove the background, then place every garment on the same white or transparent field, and a catalogue shot over several months in changing daylight starts to look like it was shot in one session.
